Five poster portraits in red and blue: Bernie Sanders DEFIANCE, AOC REVOLUTION, Gavin Newsom FORWARD, Jasmine Crockett COURAGE, Zohran Mamdani UNITE

Political Candidates I Admire (and Why They're on Our Posters)

Most of what I print at Free Oppression is symbols — arrows, crossed-out crowns, butterflies, frogs. Symbols are safer company than politicians: they never disappoint you, and nobody has to agree about a person to march under an idea. But sometimes a person carries the argument better than any mark could. This shop has five of them, each reduced — in the American poster tradition that runs from union broadsides to the 2008 HOPE portrait — to a face and one word.

These are the candidates I admire, and the word each one earned. I'm a Danish designer watching American democracy from the outside; these are personal opinions, not endorsements from anyone pictured. None of these people know this shop exists.

Bernie Sanders DEFIANCE kiss-cut sticker

Bernie Sanders — DEFIANCE

The rarest thing in politics is a person who says the same thing when it's unpopular as when it's winning polls. Sanders has spent four decades repeating one argument — that working people deserve the wealth they create — through eras that mocked it and eras that borrowed it. Defiance isn't volume. It's consistency under pressure. The Defiance collection.

AOC REVOLUTION kiss-cut sticker

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — REVOLUTION

A bartender from the Bronx out-organized one of the most entrenched machines in Congress, then refused to become furniture once inside. Whatever you think of any single vote, the shape of the story is the revolution: ordinary people are allowed to show up, run, and win. The Revolution collection.

Gavin Newsom FORWARD kiss-cut sticker

Gavin Newsom — FORWARD

When national institutions bend, the counterweight has to come from somewhere. Newsom turned a governor's office into exactly that — meeting authoritarian politics with lawsuits, budgets, and a refusal to pretend any of it is normal. Forward is what pushback looks like when it comes with a plan. The Forward collection.

Jasmine Crockett COURAGE kiss-cut sticker

Jasmine Crockett — COURAGE

Committee rooms are built to make plain speech expensive. Crockett pays the price cheerfully — saying the direct thing, on the record, to the faces involved, and doing her homework first so it sticks. Courage in a democracy is mostly this: refusing the polite lie at close range. The Courage collection.

Zohran Mamdani UNITE kiss-cut sticker

Zohran Mamdani — UNITE

The newest face on the wall, and the newest lesson: you beat big money and bigger cynicism by assembling a coalition wide enough that nobody can dismiss it. Mamdani's New York campaign was door-knocked into existence by volunteers who were told none of it could work. Unite is not a mood — it's a method. The Unite collection.

Admiration, the democratic kind

A protest shop that prints "No Kings" has to apply the rule to its own heroes. So to be precise: these posters honor virtues — defiance, revolution, forward, courage, unity — as practiced by five public people at their best. Admiration in a democracy comes with accountability attached, and every one of these five deserves both. We hang portraits of people we can criticize tomorrow. That's the whole point of the crown with the line through it.

All five poster designs live in the full catalog — as shirts, stickers, yard signs, and more — alongside the symbols they share a wall with.
