A waving flag on a pole, flat off-white on black — the practical guide to flying a protest flag

How to Fly a Protest Flag: Porch, Garden, March

A march lasts an afternoon. A flag on your porch makes the same statement every day, to everyone who passes, in all weather. This is the practical guide — mounting, sizing, and care — for getting a protest flag from the mailbox to the wind.

Single-sided vs. double-sided

A single-sided flag shows its design correctly from one face; from the other side the artwork reads mirrored. A double-sided flag has the design printed correctly on both faces, which matters anywhere people pass on both sides — porches, fences, garden poles, parade routes. Most Free Oppression flags are double-sided for exactly this reason; each product page states its printing.

Four ways to fly it

  • Porch mount: an angled bracket screwed to a post or wall, with a standard flag pole. Five minutes with a drill; the classic American front-of-house statement.
  • Garden pole: for smaller garden flags, an L-shaped garden stand by the walkway or in a planter — readable at sidewalk distance.
  • Wall or window: indoors or on a balcony, hang flat by the sleeve or grommets. In a window, remember the light: at night a backlit flag reads in silhouette, so bold marks work best.
  • At the march: a lightweight sectioned pole carries best; roll the flag around it for transport, and mind the people behind you.

Weather and care

Polyester flags handle rain and sun, but wind is the real wear factor: constant flapping frays the fly end first. Bring flags in during storms, wash cold and gentle when they gray, and never machine-dry — hang them. A flag that has earned honest fraying at a season of protests has its own dignity; retire it indoors as wall art.
